Varieties of mangoes



Mangoes of Goa cover the largest area under fruit crops in Goa that exist in a large number of varieties. The different species available in the state indicate the support extended to the mango by the Portuguese. The following are some of the species of mangoes available in Goa.

1.Goan Mankuad Mango

Each Goa mankurad mango weighs around 200-250 gms. It is rich in taste and It has a really small and flat mango stone or seed so this results into more pulp content. This mango variety is more juicy and pulpy than other alphonso mango varieties. Others names this juicy fruit is known as is Goa mankur, kurad, Malcorado, corado and more.Mankurad mango is widely available in the state. While the Portuguese called it Malcorado (which meant poor-coloured), these are smaller in size. But hey, they are juicy, tasty, and oh-so-deliciou! 
The taste of these mangaoes are much different from other mangoes . It completely lacks fibres and has a good aroma. It has a delicious, but a complex taste ls like a combination of honey and caramel , that is tempered with allspice and cinnamom . So, this mango has a very unique taste and is tasty as well.

2.Mussarat



Popularly cultivated in North Goa, Mussarat or Monserrate de Bardez is name after teh Bardez taluka where it originated. The immature fruit of this variety exhibits an intense red colour. This variety is mostly used in the preparation of jams, sweet pickles and processed products.
3.Totapuri

The totapuri mango is the earliest type of mango to identify due to its parrot beak- like shape at the tip,hence symbolizing it's name. It is from Goa,Karnataka, Andra Pradesh, Telangana and tamilnadu i.e Southern part of India.

4. Bishop


Bishop mangoes are also known as Bispo and are limitedly cultivated in North Goa. It is of mediocre quality as compared to other varieties. Lore has it that it was named after being inspired by the large belly of a bishop.
 5. Malgesh

Also known as Malgesta, Malgessa, Malgueso, Malgess, this is found more in North Goa. In Portuguese, literally means hard or difficult to digest. Malgesh is further available in two varieties of Khand Malgesh (thick-skinned, inferior quality) and Akno Malgesh (superior quality).

6.Alphonso/Hapus

Alphonso mango is unlike any other type of mango and is the king of all mangoes. It is a native to Maharashtra but is also grown in some parts of Gujarat, Karnataka and Goa,Madhya Pradesh.It is the most expensive variety of mango due to its distinct taste, colour and shape.

Colour: Bright golden yellow with the tinge of red.
Taste: Sweet with rich flavor and Creamy texture
